Commission alone is not enough to compare channels
For an online booking channel, commission is immediately visible. In direct sales, costs may be spread across advertising, website maintenance, payment services and the manager's time. Ignoring them biases the comparison towards the direct channel from the start.
Channels may bring guests for different dates. One source fills peak weekends, while another brings weekday bookings. Rejecting the second solely because of higher acquisition costs may leave part of the calendar empty.
Compare completed stays
A confirmed booking does not yet equal earned revenue. Cancellations, refunds and no-shows change the picture. To review a period, compare completed stays and consider future bookings separately as expected demand.
Use a consistent basis: the same properties, similar dates and the same treatment of fees. If one report includes cleaning charges while another shows accommodation only, the difference may reflect accounting rather than channel performance.
Longer bookings change the result
A source with a lower rate sometimes brings longer stays. Fewer guest changes may partly offset the price difference. Another channel sells shorter stays at higher rates but requires more cleaning. View nights and arrivals alongside revenue.
To assess performance, subtract commissions, acquisition costs and direct servicing costs from completed-stay revenue. This is not yet net profit, because fixed business costs remain. But it provides more information than ranking sources by turnover.
Different channels may serve different roles
Large platforms help find new guests. Your own website supports direct relationships, while repeat enquiries reflect the quality of the previous experience. Owners need to understand each source's role rather than seek one winner for every date.
Aplus PMS links bookings from connected channels to properties and financial records. This provides a basis for comparison if costs and sources are recorded consistently. Start with one period and one group of similar properties so seasonality does not hide an important difference.
